Microsoft, Adobe Push Critical Security Fixes

If you use Microsoft or Adobe software products, chances are that software is now dangerously out of date. Microsoft today released seven update bundles to fix two dozen security vulnerabilities in Windows and supported software. Adobe pushed patches to correct critical flaws in AcrobatReader and Flash Player, including a bug in Flash that already is being exploited.
brokenwindowsFour of the seven updates from Microsoft earned a “critical” rating, which means the patches on fix vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malware or attackers to seize control over vulnerable systems without any help from users (save for perhaps visiting a hacked or malicious Web site). One of those critical patches — for Internet Explorer — plugs at least 14 holes in the default Windows browser.
Another critical patch plugs two vulnerabilities in Microsoft Word and Office Web Apps (including Office for Mac 2011). There are actually three patches this month that address Microsoft Office vulnerabilities, including MS14-082 and MS-14-083, both of which are rated “important.” A full breakdown of these and other patches released by Microsoft today is here.
Adobe’s Flash Player update brings the player to v. 16.0.0.235 for Windows and Mac users, and fixes at least six critical bugs in the software. Adobe said an exploit for one of the flaws, CVE-2014-9163, already exists in the wild.
“These updates address vulnerabilities that could potentially allow an attacker to take over the affected system,” the company said in its advisory.

Da, Windows Phone outsells the iPhone in seven countries...or does it?

Microsoft, always looking for any way to tout good news about Windows Phone, claims that it outsells the iPhone in seven countries. But is that really the case? It's not as clear as it first appears. Da, Windows Phone outsells the iPhone in seven countries...or does it?

Macs dig in as standard business PCs

Enterprise backup of Macs is the latest in a string of products that show OS X is becoming part of the IT landscape By

In the last year, I've witnessed a sea change in Macs' acceptance in business. To be sure, Macs have been the standard PCs for designers, layout artists, and the like since the mid-1980s, and Silicon Valley developers adopted the Mac as the preferred dev platform years ago (because it runs Unix, Linux, and Windows, too). MacBook Airs became senior execs' preferred status-symbol PCs a couple years ago as well.

But for bread-and-butter computing, it has been a Windows-only world. Those creative, dev, and exec Macs were the "other" handled outside the normal IT processes. That's changing -- fast. Gartner says IT will consider Macs to be as valid as Windows PCs next year. The tools to enable that are already coming.

Windows 8 Beats The Mac, Appsolutely

Windows 8 Beats The Mac, Appsolutely well at least according to InformationWeek Editor At Large, Paul McDougall

"Microsoft's new operating system looks how a modern OS should--big, bold, and centered around apps. Suddenly, it's Apple's turn to catch up.

Windows 8 apps are true apps, as I would define the term: Full-screen, specialized purpose, touchable, and always connected. And they can run on PCs or tablets, and have close cousins that will run on Windows Phone 8, which also uses Modern UI. For functions not suitable for touch, Windows 8 can be used with traditional input tools. And the classic Explorer desktop can be accessed on Windows 8 Pro and Enterprise with a single click.

OSX Mountain Lion? Despite some new fit and finish, it remains a traditional PC operating system that is a bridge too far from Apple's iOS-based mobile products. It sticks with old-style applications (window-based, general purpose, manipulated through mouse and keyboard) and the browser as the gateway to information and services." Researcher digs up another zero-day Java bug

Computerworld - A security researcher known for finding Java bugs has uncovered a new critical zero-day vulnerability in all currently-supported versions of the popular Oracle software.
The bug, which was publicly reported on the Full Disclosure security mailing list Tuesday by Adam Gowdiak, the founder and CEO of Polish security firm Security Explorations, can be leveraged to hijack a machine equipped with Java, letting attackers install malware on the system.
Windows PCs and Macs are equally at risk if their users have installed Java, or in the case of OS X, are running 10.6, aka Snow Leopard, or earlier. Snow Leopard was the last edition where Apple bundled Java with the operating system.
All currently-support versions of Java, including Java 5, Java 6 and Java 7, contain the bug.

UPRISING! Microsofties Trash Ballmer After Disastrous All-Hands Meeting

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer failed to fire up the troops at the company's huge internal staff meeting on Friday, according to gossipy commenters on the Mini Microsoft blog.
Employees were apparently walking out in "droves," and felt a general apathy for Ballmer.
Mini-Microsoft acts as an unofficial message board for the company. It is authored by an anonymous employee who wants to see Microsoft slim down. Each post is filled with comments from former or current employees.

iPad 2 Extends Apple's Lead: Apple Will Dominate The Tablet Market For Years

Apple's iPad 2 isn't a massive advance over the first iPad, but with hardware, software, apps, distribution, and pricing combined, it is still by far the best tablet on the market.

Despite recent announcements from Google, Motorola, Samsung, HP, and RIM, we still expect Apple to dominate the tablet market for years.

While competition will intensify, the iPad will continue to be the best all-around product for consumers, and therefore Apple should maintain very high market share (settling to 50%-60%) for at least several years.
